RE Division Attends Annual National Association of REALTORS® Conference

$

Emphasys employees in the Real Estate division headed to the Big Easy in November for the National Association of REALTORS® Conference & Expo, the industry’s premier event, where we showcased the BrokerOffice product. Of the roughly 19,000 real estate agents and brokers in attendance, we connected with over 300 brokers, and the sales team is busy following up on numerous leads.

Unlike some of our sister divisions, the RE division does not host a user conference. We focus on the annual REALTORS conference as our main networking event, and attend smaller trade shows throughout the year as well.

On the 17th and 18th of March, the first Juniper Academy event took place in Palma de Majorca, where 15 workers from different departments participated and met Mike Byrne, (Emphasys CEO), Christian Cozza (Director of Business development, M &A in Emphasys Software) and Jaime Sastre (Juniper CEO).

The objectives of the Juniper Academy event were the following:

  • Acknowledge the importance of timely project execution
  • Acknowledge poor quality impact
  • How to work in a team to help continuous improvement
  • Acknowledge the importance of Communication

The dynamism of the course was very practical. The alumni worked in teams to edit videos and share the day-to-day difficulties that they find in the different departments within Juniper and how to cope better by improving them.

CEO Mike Byrne to Retire; Replacement to Be Named

$

In an unexpected move, Emphasys Software CEO Mike Byrne has announced his immediate retirement from the company. He has cited a desire to join the Metéora monastery in Greece as the primary motive for his departure.

“Becoming an Eastern Orthodox monk has always been on my bucket list,” noted Byrne in a recent interview. “I feel I’ve been called to a contemplative life. Now that my kids are out of elementary school, it just seemed like the right time.”

The upheaval has created an immediate need for a replacement. The company has announced a Survivor-style competition to take place later this month, where potential CEOs will be marooned at a yet-to-be-named island location to battle each other for a million-cent cash prize and the title of Chief Executive Officer.

The company hopes to hire internally. Many of those vying for the title already work for Emphasys. Candidate Jessica Searles said, “I’ve been a Marketing Technical Specialist for a couple of years now with lots of SEO experience, so CEO seemed like the next logical step. I’m already working on making alliances with people I plan to stab in the back later.”

Unlike most episodes of Survivor, it’s been hinted that castaways will be sent someplace cold so that no one has to see them in bathing suits, although one interviewer noted that many candidates are from colder climates and may be used to participating in polar bear plunges. “We certainly hope that doesn’t happen,” he said, “but you never know.”

If you’re interested in competing for the CEO position, please fill out the form below to submit your application. All entries are due April 1, 2015.

This January, the PHA Division announced to its base the date and location for Users Connect 2015.

On August 23, 2015, Emphasys will welcome clients to Austin, Texas, for our annual training and educational conference. The core conference, featuring classes and presentations for housing executives, managers and product users, will run from August 23 to 26. We’ll once again offer the popular post-conference, hands-on training sessions after the main conference on August 27. These smaller classes allow participants to interact directly with the software and further explore affordable housing topics.

Our host hotel for Users Connect, the Omni Austin Hotel Downtown, is located in the center of Austin’s vibrant downtown area with great access to all the local attractions including the famed 6th Street Entertainment District. We’re looking forward to putting on another great user conference for our clients and are anticipating over 200 attendees again this year.

RE Division: Coming to America

$

The Real Estate division launched a new campaign in February to expand our strong customer base in Canada into the United States. The goals over the campaign period include:

  • Gain 44 new clients
  • 36 new client referrals
  • Complete 8 new development milestones
  • Increase sales price 10%
  • 250k in sales growth

Each department has different milestones to reach along the way, which are designed so that departments contribute to the end goal. For example, one Support milestone is for each support member to get at least two client referrals each month. This will assist the Sales team with new leads to help reach the new-client goal.

Prizes for milestones include lunch and movie-pack gift cards, Fitbit or Nike Fuel Band, Amazon Kindle Fire HD 6, and more, with prize upgrades for meeting stretch goals.

KelyKely Cid Ravelo is originally from Cuba but now makes her home in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She’s a Software Developer at the Miami office. He now resides in Sweetwater, but mentioned that he’d like to move back to Coral Gables or Brickell in the future. He’s not yet married or seeing anyone, but says he’s “ready to mingle.” (Perfect dating profile photo, Paul!) Paul attended Florida International University where he obtained a degree in Public Relations with a minor in Marketing. When asked about his prior work experience, Paul told us, “Before coming to work at Emphasys, I had the privilege of working for an importing company. It was named Atlas flowers. The flowers you might have purchased last year for Mother’s Day had a good chance of coming from my company. You probably overpaid.” His hobbies and interests include long distance running, film, traveling and working with his business Fraternity’s alumni chapter (former e-board), and his favorite movie quote is, “May the force be with you.”

arveloMichael Arvelo is a Software Developer in the Miami office. Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, his family moved to Miami when he was 3, and he continues to reside there. He attended Florida International University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, and before joining the team at Emphasys, he worked for Miami Dade College. Josh moved to Miami in 2010 to attend college. Not yet married, Josh is currently happy and enjoying life with his significant other. He attended Florida International University, where earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and double majored in International Business & Marketing. Before coming to Emphasys, Josh worked for a wine/spirits importer in Downtown Miami/Brickell. I was also President of the Professional Business Fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, at FIU. He’s proud to note that, “On the top of my head at least 5 brothers have worked or are currently working for Emphasys Software…with more coming soon maybe!” A huge baseball fan, Josh’s favorite team is the Tampa Bay Rays, and he enjoys random facts, listening to NPR, and the occasional gaming session. Josh is obsessed with Dachshunds. Overall, his family owns six: Mocha (who turns 10 in June), Cocoa, Pixie, Bella, Bailey and Godiva.

“Tie two birds together, and even though they have four wings, they cannot fly.”
–Blind Man, Circle of Iron

alexBorn in Manhattan and raised in Scarsdale, New York, Alex Castro is a Business Development Associate in the Miami office. He’s been living in Miami since 2006, and considers himself very lucky to be getting married to fiancee Vania this summer. Alex has a Bachelor’s degree from Florida International University, and he’s currently an MBA student a Nova Southeastern University. He’s considering a law degree after that. Prior to Emphasys, he worked at the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce. (He’s glad that those days are over!) April Innovation Games Recap

$

0

This past April, Emphasys teams met in Miami to vie for development funding in an Innovation Games matchup. “Mobile” was the theme of the week, as the division-based teams each developed a new product idea over a four-day period, competing for points along the way. The teams then pitched their ideas to panel of investors known as the Dolphin Tank (Shark Tank style), whose investment dollars would be a major factor in determining the victor. The tally of points plus investment dollars awarded determined the winners.

The panel of ruthless, venture-capitalist “Dolphins” consisted of:

RainMaker, an intense individual who has a very passionate approach to investing. He brought either cash or tears to pour down on contestants depending on whether they are accepted or rejected.

DaMoney, who has deep pockets and has been involved in the tech industry for over 20 years. He likes a little bit of flash and told those who pitched him, “Impress me and I’ll make you CA$$H!”

Supreme Queen Spears, who is all about the money and while she has no problems giving it away, she wanted a solid return and “no flashy BS.” She quickly cut off teams who dared show any sign of disrespect.

Mr. Not-so-Wonderful: Mike Byrne. Enough said.

The winning team, known as The Power Travelers, hailed mainly from the TTM Division (Travel & Tourism Management). The Power Travelers put together a compelling presentation for a mobile app that travel agents could offer to their customers. This mobile app stores the traveler’s itinerary and offers an easy way to secure transportation, get tickets to local attractions, and write reviews.

The winning team and judges, from left to right: Mario Pineda, Nawana Faria, Marina Rodriguez, Rosa Sanchez (all of the Power Travelers), followed by judges Mike Byrne (Mr. Not-so-Wonderful), Vilma Figueroa (Supreme Queen Spears), Roland Latortue (Da Money), and Jeff Gardner (Rainmaker).

In second place, the HFA division team – The Flipping Georgies – proposed Lender Xpress, a mobile app for the Lender Portal product. It gives loan recipients 24/7 access to loan information and eDocs, offering easy navigation, instant rate information, notifications, and a unique voice command feature called Ask Georgie.

The Real Estate division, Team Smurf, had a bronze medal finish* with its proposal for a mobile app that real estate brokerages could offer to their agents. Based on the Virtual Office product, Virtual Office Mobile offers a listing manager, on-the-go messaging, showing feedback, mobile sync with contacts/calendar/map, and commission reports.
*Three teams competed, so third place could also be viewed as last, but why quibble?

The HFT Division is currently in the final stages of planning and execution for the 2015 Divisional Campaign. With the revamping and completion of the myEmphasys Client Portal, HFA looks to kick off their newest campaign as the HFT division strives to focus primarily on rebuilding marketing inside the division. The HFT team will work together as a collective marketing team, building on the brand, client-facing content and customer focus.

Vivian Cueva, Director of Operations for the HFT Division, notes that engaged employees, attuned to delivering a brand promise, are the key to delivering influential experiences and client-facing innovation. She states: “This campaign will be focused on taking charge, taking the lead and soaring through myEmphasys. We won’t give out too many specifics as the campaign has not been formally announced. But, stay tuned for more details and the progress of the HFT Soaring through myEmphasys 2015 Campaign.”

The fun is not far behind. HFT division employees are reminded of the healthy competition and travel-inspired incentives that will be a large part of the campaign.

2015 Academy Recap

Earlier this month, from July 7th through 10th, select Emphasys employees took the trip out to Minnesota to participate in The Academy. With little-to-no prior knowledge about what they would be doing, they came in ready to learn the purpose behind their 4-day venture, and most importantly find out what team they would be on. The night began by going around the room with each person introducing themselves along with stating an interesting fact; the group learned that there are in fact two Jerome’s in our office, respectively dubbed Jerome #1 and Jerome 2.0 (it’s up to you to distinguish which one is which), certain employees can cook up a mean pizza, someone has completed three Ironman triathlons, and there is a Battlestar Galactica enthusiast within our midst.

After having a couple laughs and learning a bit about one another, the group settled in to get the competition details. There would be four teams with four to five different team members from the various company divisions – sales, software development, support tech, etc. Their objective would be to create a Real Estate product development plan based on specific criteria given to them by the executive team. Each group would have to cohesively work together and use each team member’s strengths and knowledge to come up with a realistic and accurate model.

In addition to designing the various product sections pertaining to their final project, each group also had to create several videos based off of the company values. The 2-minute clips had original content, and really demonstrated the creativity and determination our employees had in delivering top-quality material.

Being excited going to work

After strategizing within their teams and going over project specifics Wednesday morning, everyone headed outside after lunch for a quick competition. The event began with each team having the opportunity to regale their executive members, Mike, Shawn and Seth, with water balloons. Various methods of pulling and angling the slingshots were tried, but there was unfortunately only one semi-successful attempt. Sorry about your pants, Seth. The latter portion of the event put each team head to head with one another. Later on in the day, the teams went downstairs for a friendly pizza-baking competition.

Team #4 preparing to launch

With an assortment of ingredients laid out for them by the kitchen staff, the four teams set out to cook the best tasting pizza they could muster in 45 minutes. There was a twist on the Hawaiian favorite and a Japanese inspired pizza, with vegetables and mozzarella squares. In the end, with an apple and ham Gorgonzola pizza, drizzled with local Minnesota honey on top, Team #2 was named the champion with compliments from the chef. The choice of toppings might sound a bit bizarre, but it had a very distinct and enjoyable taste to it.

Thursday everyone came together for an Emphasys volleyball match. It all came down to Developers vs. Sales, with no predictions as to how the game would end up. With a final score of 18-21, Sales came out on top. Their reward? A week of coffee service when they got back to the Miami office, courtesy of the developers. It also turned out to be a bit of a nostalgic night for some groups, reminiscent of the “all-nighters” some pulled in college, with last minute fixing and planning for the big presentation. By Friday morning, after a multitude of quick-fire rounds and team meetings all week long, the groups were ready to find out who would be crowned the next winner of the highly coveted Emphasys cup.

Volleyball game action

For the short amount of time given, all four teams had great presentations and impressive prototypes. There was a lot of hard work and brainstorming that went on amongst each team, and even though some people might have found themselves unfamiliar with some of the information, everyone pulled through to learn new data and deliver exceptional content. Congratulations to all participants and special congrats to the overall contest winners, Team #3: Scott Scott, Monica del Prado, Joseph Gonzalez, Lane Occhiello and Lawrence Stubbs. We look forward to what next year’s Academy will bring!

Real Estate Division Announces New Website

resite

The Real Estate (RE) division is pleased to announce the launch of its new website last week. The site was redesigned from scratch with several goals in mind:

Increase Conversions
As with the product suites offered by other divisions at Emphasys, the RE division’s software suite is complex. The new site tackled this challenge in two ways.

First, the site offers product information in bite-size chunks. Rather than overwhelming visitors with large blocks of text, the site piques interest and prompts visitors to fill out a form to receive more information.

Second, the site segments visitors based on brokerage size (i.e., number of agents). Visitors receive more information about products they’re likely to be interested in, and less information about products not suited to their needs.

It’s too soon to draw conclusions, but early results suggest a significant increase in conversions.

Be Mobile Friendly
Earlier this year, Google changed its algorithm to boost the rankings of mobile friendly sites in searches on mobile devices. About 10% of traffic reaches the RE division website via mobile devices, so a mobile friendly design was high on our list of improvements.

Refresh Branding
Web design tastes change, so the old site’s design was starting to look stale. In addition, the RE division is shifting away from its BrokerOffice suite branding in order to focus on branding as the Emphasys Real Estate division. Therefore, the new site’s address is now EmphasysRE.com, and we’ve dropped “residential” from the division name.

Socialserve.com – a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to safe, affordable housing through customized technology and live call-center support – is a leading provider of online listing websites for affordable and special needs housing.

“This acquisition brings Emphasys even closer to its vision of a complete Affordable Housing Solution that spans not only market leading Public Housing Authority software but also market leading State Housing Finance Agency program software,” said Michael Byrne, CEO of Emphasys Software.  “We welcome the incredible staff from Socialserve.com who have focused on the technology and solution side of the business into Emphasys. We know through many of the clients we have in common the tremendous reputation and quality of service that we strive to build upon.”

Listings can include photos and extensive information about property and neighborhood amenities, accessibility features, pet accommodations, eligibility requirements and more.

“We have come to know Emphasys through many years of working next to and with them,” said Van Gottel, founder of Socialserve.com. “I am confident that the team at Emphasys will be able to provide the opportunity for our products, our staff and our clients to have an even better outcome in the coming years.”

Socialserve.com will continue to work closely with Emphasys through an ongoing partnership that will allow Emphasys to extend the technology offering and amplify the Socialserve.com nonprofit mission. This partnership will provide a foundation that Emphasys and Socialserve.com plan to build on for years to come.
