Petoskey, MI – April 7, 2011

The PHA Division of Emphasys Software announced today that their WebApp, a solution that lets public housing authorities accept applications to their waiting lists online, accepted nearly 8,800 applications in a single day. While other housing authorities using a competitor’s solution faced challenges, Emphasys and the Executive Director were pleased with how WebApp performed for the Inkster Housing Commission in Inkster, Michigan. “We contracted with Emphasys in late March. In a matter of a couple of days we went from a test system to a full deployment of a customized preliminary application for the Inkster Housing Commission. Though we didn’t anticipate anywhere near the volume of applications we actually received in a single day, Emphasys delivered on-time and made sure the system performed flawlessly,” said Tony Love, Executive Director of the Inkster Housing Commission. This isn’t the largest amount of applications accepted online by WebApp - Miami Dade Public Housing Agency set that record with over 75,000 in just under a month – but it is a single-day record.

High Performance Solutions Aren’t Natural

“A few years ago, we read about a housing authority in Illinois that had their online process fail because of high loads,” remarked Chris Lema, Vice President of Software Development for Emphasys Software. “We knew at that point that ease of use and the ability to support multi-lingual applications were only part of the equation. High performance solutions aren’t natural. You have to specifically design them to support high concurrent traffic.”

It’s an Issue of Focus

Over the last two years, Emphasys Software has started offering not only WebApp for clients, but also hosting – ensuring that customers can stop worrying about high traffic peaks on their own network infrastructure. “After all,” said Larry Huckle, PHA’s division General Manager, “our customers are focused on helping their communities, not on the intricacies of server configuration or maintenance.”

2500% Better than Expected

“We were really pleased with yesterday’s performance,” stated Lema. “We added some additional monitoring because our customer wasn’t clear on traffic. High loads can affect that application’s performance, but also any of the  numerous other clients that we provide hosting for. This client estimated 300 applications would come in. Clearly everyone was surprised when the total was over 25 times that.”

In February the PHA Division kicked off Rock the Tickets 2014!, a new campaign to increase our responsiveness to clients by increasing how quickly we resolve Support tickets. The campaign’s ultimate goal is to consistently close 75% of all PHA Support calls within 48 hours. Co-captains are Jim Graham and Merle Ann Besonen.

To add some fun and a little competitiveness to the program, staffers are eligible to win multiple prizes at different levels and can check a real-time scorecard to see who the top performers are.

Prizes offered include iTunes gift cards, Hard Rock Café gift cards, stereo equipment from Bose and even concert tickets. Our top performers over the past couple of months who have taken home prizes are Frankie Dickinson, Jean Smith and Jerry VanDreumel.

All PHA staff can participate in this initiative by doing things like working on and closing Support or Implementation tickets, following up with clients, sending out reports or assisting clients with year end/month end processing. Each of these items are weighted differently and earn staff points towards valuable prizes and bragging rights.

So far Rock the Tickets 2014! is moving ahead nicely with the close rate of tickets moving steadily upwards. We started at 52% and are currently at 58% with three months to go. Nicely done PHA, and keep on a rockin’!

PHA Division: Emphasys Users Connect

PHA’s annual users conference is called Emphasys Users Connect. This year, is runs from August 17 – 20 in Nashville, Tennessee, at the Renaissance Nashville Hotel, with post-conference workshops on August 21.

The agenda is still under wraps, but post-conference workshops are already lined up. They have proven so popular in recent years that the PHA Division is expanding the offerings in 2014.

Saturday, May 10th marked the opening of the Sue DeYoung / Judy Edger Breast Cancer 5K Walk and Run. Longtime Emphasys employees will remember former coworker Terry Edger, whose wife, Judy (the event’s namesake) died of breast cancer in 1999, so it’s an event close to many of our hearts. Proceeds benefited breast cancer research.

The HFA Division launched its six-month myEmphasys Rocks campaign on May 23rd, complete with rockin’ tunes and a rock band theme. The purpose of this campaign is provide an easy-to-use online site for clients to be able to look up good, accurate, easy-to-read white papers, knowledge base articles, user guides and videos to help accomplish their tasks with the HFA systems. The goal is for clients to take advantage of the self-help site instead of immediately calling Support for assistance.

Jeff, accompanied by his bodyguard, HFA General Manager George Rodriquez, is getting ready to throw t-shirts to his adoring fans.

Emphasys Software announced recently that it completed the acquisition of Juniper, a comprehensive travel software solution used by tour operators and destination management companies throughout the world. We welcome the roughly 125 employee to the Emphasys family.

Mike Byrne noted in a recent email to the Emphasys team that Juniper is based in Palma de Mallorca (an island off the coast of Spain, close to Barcelona), with a sales and service office in Miami. The Miami employees will be moving into our Miami office shortly.

Over the next year, Christian Cozza will take on role of Integration Manager to ensure a smooth transition for the Juniper team into the Emphasys fold with minimal disruptions to their business and maximum positive impact. Stay tuned for updates in future newsletters.

This past August, the PHA Division hosted its annual educational conference for users in Nashville, Tennessee. The response to this year’s Users Connect from clients was tremendous with 215 clients from more than 80 PHAs joining us for training, seminars, demos, discussions and networking. Twenty staff from the PHA Division were on hand to keep things running smoothly and they did an excellent job leading training sessions, facilitating meetings, and presenting key content to our attendees.

Music City was not all work and we did have time to treat our PHA guests to plenty of live music, excellent BBQ and even mechanical bull rides.

HFA celebrated its 27th annual User Conference at Miami’s Eden Roc Miami Beach Resort. The 2015 conference proved to be a successful event with utterly satisfied customers! After months of preparation, with our event completed, we would like to thank all of the HFA staff for their outstanding efforts and participation. Your excellent planning helped to make this one of the best conferences to date – running smoothly and on schedule.

A new activity last has officially become tradition: the conference included “Dancing with the Staff” on its program. Its well-received debut in 2013 begged for an encore in 2014. This year’s salsa instruction was better than last year – engaging more attendees and allowing for a more energetic crowd ready to dance and compete! The winner was Brandon Morey of Mississippi Home Corporation.

Clients were enthusiastic about new product development. HFA unveiled the long-awaited debut of SMART Network, leaving clients eager and enthused about the future of our technology. Guest speakers, Mike Awadis, Vice Present, First Southwest, provided an in-depth outlook on the TBA Market, affording our clients a unique perspective. HFA also welcomed Claudia O’Grady, Vice President of Multifamily, Utah Housing, as she shared her exclusive experience with Emphasys Software, best practices, accomplishments and goals.
